Home Remedies for Anorexia

Self induced emotional eating disorder characterized by persistent loss of appetite is called anorexia. Excessive consciousness toward weight loss, counting calories and excessive exercises can lead to a severe emotional eating disorder called anorexia.

Anorexia is a very common neuropsychological disorder that has a very high incidence in the young population. Anorexia is not just an eating disorder, it also involves many addictive behaviors and the development of various phobias related to food and being fat. Anorexics develop inaccurate perceptions of their physical appearance and they often see themselves as fat, regardless of how much they actually weigh. Anorexia is a very complex disorder caused by multiple interrelated factors.

Causes of Anorexia:

1. Self esteem issues- if you have low self esteem you are more likely to suffer from anorexia.

2. You compete in sports like ballet, gymnastics, or cheerleading- If you feel like you need to be thinner in order to compete then you might develop anorexia to cope with the pressure to be thinner.

3. Personal issues- you are sad or lonely because of personal issues such as a death in the family, divorce, breakup etc.

4. Depression-depression can make you have anorexia because when you are sad or lonely you are less inclined to eat or take care of yourself.

5. Media-television, magazines, and mass media all emphasize being thin. Many people want to be skinny like models and celebrities so they become anorexic.

Symptoms of Anorexia:

•    Becomes very thin and frail

•    Weighs themselves all the time

•    Exercises excessively

•    Obsessed with food and weight

•    Withdraws from social activities specially if it involves eating

•    Keeps count of the food portion they eat

•    Excessive consideration to become thinner and thinner.

•    Misperception of body shape and weight.

•    Fear of body weight gain and fat.

•    Regular skipping of meals.

•    Mostly eat selective foods, which are low in fat and calories.

•    Usually wear loose clothes to hide thinness.

•    In males decreased libido and in females irregular menstrual periods.

Treatment  of Anorexia:

1. Anorexia can be treated with psychotherapy and diet advice but these are only effective if the person is ready to get better. Cognitive techniques which recognize the importance of addressing distorted self-body images and perfectionist thinking are frequently used, and should be part of the initial focus of treatment.

2. Treatment is a must and is most effective when started early. Because it is as much an emotional disorder as a physical one, treatment would include working in tandem with a doctor, a counselor and a dietician.

3. Antidepressants (such as amitriptyline) are the usual drug treatment and may speed up the recovery process.

5. Chlorpromazine may be beneficial for those individuals suffering from severe obsessions and increased anxiety and agitation.

6. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is never an appropriate treatment option for a person suffering from an uncomplicated eating disorder.

7. Self-help methods for the treatment of this disorder are often overlooked by the medical profession.

8. Oftentimes additional psychiatric concerns must be addressed such as specific traumatic events.

9. Self-help groups may also be helpful. It is often comforting to talk to other people who have been through the same thing.

Home Remedies for Angina

Angina is a form of heart disease where the blood flow to the heart is restricted by a blockage in one or more of the arteries that carry blood into the heart.

When the coronary arteries become furred up and harden due to coronary heart disease (CHD) the heart muscles are starved of oxygen-rich blood, this can cause a heavy squeezing pain that can last between 5 to 30 minutes. This pain is called angina.

Angina is basically chest pain due to heart not getting enough oxygen. Angina is a squeezing, crushing like pain, or discomfort, in the upper abdomen, back, neck, jaw, or shoulders. Angina is usually triggered by exertion or emotional stress. Pain may be accompanied by sweating, nausea, or gasping for breath. Angina pain lasts about 1 to 15 minutes, and is usually relieved by rest.

Causes of Angina:

Heart failure

Narrowing of the aortic heart valve

Anaemia

Abnormal heart rhythms

Fast, abnormal heart rhythms,

Diseases of the heart muscle.

Coronary artery spasm

Uncontrolled high blood pressure

Symptoms of Angina:

Shortness of breath

Nausea

Feeling of moderate to severe indigestion that is persistent

Perspiration

Sharp, burning or cramping pain

Numbness or a loss of feeling in your arms, shoulders or wrists.

May also occur in the arms, shoulders, neck, jaw, throat, or back

Usually start in the chest behind the breastbone.

Squeezing Pressure

Tight crushing pain

Types of Angina:

There are 2 types of angina. The first one is Stable Angina. It refers to the demonstration of the symptoms after activities which exert once self like jogging or lifting a heavy weight. The other is Unstable Angina which occurs without provocation. You can be at rest; it can be sudden and also escalating. This is due to blood clots being released from the blood vessels.

Test for Angina:

. A blood test. To test for anaemia, cholesterol, thyroid hormones, heart enzymes as all these may be related to angina.

. An ECG (electrocardiogram). A symptom-free ECG may be normal. However if your heart is stressed in one way or another, an abnormal ECG may be evident.

Treatment for Angina:

1] Eliminating or minimizing risk factors of coronary artery disease by treating high blood pressure, lowering high cholesterol levels, quitting smoking, exercise and weight loss if needed.

2] Drug therapy, including beta-blockers, nitrates (such as nitroglycerin), calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and anti-clotting drugs.

3] Rest.

4] Make Lifestyle changes (aimed towards better health)

5] Reduce Obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure

6] Quit Smoking

7] Reduce Blood Sugar (If you have high blood sugar)

8] Avoid larger Meals

9] Reduce Stress (Try Meditation - It really helps!)

10] Juice therapy with cantaloupe juice is said to cure most angina pains. The adenosine compound found in the juice of fresh cantaloupe helps thin the blood.

11] Multivitamin and multiminerals.

12] Antioxidant complex

13] Bypass is a surgical procedure where a vein or artery is sewn in place around the arteries of the heart, to provide an increased blood flow to the heart.

Home Remedies for Amnesia

Amnesia is a disease of the brain which affects the remembering area of the memory. It is affected by any severe head injury and or thru the intake of some toxic matter affecting the brain. This disease could impact all those suffering from heart stroke or paralysis. People suffering from Amnesia have tough time recollecting the previously known and learnt information like their language or name.

What causes Amnesia?

The degeneration and permanent loss of brain cells. Reasons for the cell loss vary. Aging, malnutrition or vitamin deficiency, stroke, head trauma, and dementia are among the physical culprits leading to amnesia, but genetics and psychological factors often figure into the causation equation as well.

What are the symptoms of Amnesia?

Amnesia symptoms differ from memory lapses or forgetfulness in a few different ways. The first difference being that general memory lapses or forgetfulness tend to be minor or short lived. We may forget that we came to the living room to look for our keys, but we remember by the time we get to the doorway or back to the kitchen. Amnesia is a more complete memory loss where we would forget that we even have keys or we may never recall that we were looking for them. The person will begin to forget what just happened or that they asked a certain question. They will insist that it never happened or they never said it when confronted about it.

One of the other signs of amnesia is that certain memories are locked away completely and cannot be accessed.

Different types of Amnesia:

Lacunar amnesia

Lacunar amnesia relates directly the loss of memory on one specific event.

Global amnesia

Global amnesia is when you lose your entire memory. It is thought that this is a defense mechanism that are body instates after a very traumatic event. As a result of this complete loss, it is common that post-traumatic stress disorder can develop, and involve the spontaneous and realistic flashes of these traumatic memoreis.

Traumatic amnesia

Traumatic amnesia occurs most often due to a head injury, such as falling or being hit on the head. General with traumatic amnesia the length of the amnesia is directly related to the extent of the injury itself.

Dissociative amnesia

Dissociative amnesia refers to the long-term repressed memory that can result in emotional or pschological trauma.

Childhood amnesia

Childhood amnesia, which in several instances is called Infantile amnesia, is probably the most common type of amnesia - the failure to remember events from our childhoods.

Treatment of Amnesia:

1] Cognitive therapies enable patients to regain lost skills and possibly prevent further loss of brain cells and memory.

2] ALMONDS enhancement memory. To utilize the benefits, soak 10 to 12 nuts overnight, remove the skin and create a paste to be consumed every morning.

3] APPLES are rich in iron, phosphorus, potassium and vitamin B1 -- all components that assist in brain-cell recovery.

4] ROSEMARY has long been used in treating problems of the nervous system, too. The daily intake of rosemary tea maintains freshness and alertness of mind.

Home Remedies for Anemia

Anemia is a general term for a category of blood conditions that affect the red blood cells or the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin they contain.

Anemia is defined as haemoglobin concentration in blood below the lower limit of the normal range for the age and sex of the individual. In adults, the lower extreme of the normal haemoglobin is taken as 13 g% for males and 11.5% for females. New born infants have higher haemoglobin levels and therefore, 15% is taken as the lower limit at birth, whereas at 3 months, the lower limit is taken as 9.5%. Although haemoglobin value is employed as the only parameter for determining whether or not anemia is present, the red cell counts, haematocrit(PCV) and absolute values (MCV, MCH and MCHC) provide alternate means of assessing anemia.

Causes of Anemia:

Most important and persistent cause of the disease remains the intake of an unbalanced diet that lacks in iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin C that helps the body to absorb iron.

Anemia is a result of systemic toxemia and acidosis-a condition of poisons, toxins and accumulated waste products floating in the blood - and lymph-streams, and of enervation or lowered nerve-tone.

Symptoms of Anemia:

• Tiredness

• Easy fatigue

• Generalized muscular weakness

• Lethargy

• Headache

 . Difficulties in breathing

Types of Anemia:

1) Macrocytic anemia: Macrocytic anemia can be further divided into "megaloblastic anemia" or "non-megaloblastic macrocytic anemia". The cause of megaloblastic anemia is primarily a failure of DNA synthesis with preserved RNA synthesis, which result in restricted cell division of the progenitor cells.

2) Microcytic anemia: Microcytic anemia caused due to hemoglobin synthesis failure or insufficiency. Iron deficiency anemia is the common type of anemia so it has many causes. RBCs often appear hypochromic (paler than usual) and microcytic (smaller than usual) when viewed with a microscope

3) Normocytic anemia :Normocytic anaemia causes when the overall Hb levels are decreased, but the red blood cell size (MCV) remains normal.

Causes include:

•    Accurate blood loss

•    Anemia of chronic disease

•    Bone marrow failure Aplastic anemia

4) Heinz body anemia: Heinz bodies are an abnormality that forms on the cells in this condition. This form of anemia may be brought on by taking certain medications; it is also triggered in cats by eating onions or acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Treatment of Iron deficiency Anemia:

1] Having bath with cold water twice a day.

2] Professional massages to flush out body toxins.

3] Practicing deep breathing exercises for ten minutes a day.

4] Practicing yoga and involving oneself in vibrant exercises.

5] Exogenous EPO is identical to the natural hormone in its role of stimulating the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. EPO has been used safely in many clinical settings, including chronic renal failure, oncology, and surgery.

6] Turmeric, fresh chives, and dandelion are also said to help where iron deficiency anemia is concerned.

7] Blackstrap molasses are one of the best sources of iron sand can be used as a natural sweetener (refined sugar tends to slow down iron absorption).

8] Cooking in a traditional iron pot can help supplement any deficiency in the food itself, or help in the treatment of anemia.

Home Remedies for Abrasions

Abrasion is common minor injury resulting from a cut or tear to the outer or inner layers of the skin. Most cuts and abrasions can be successfully treated at home, though deeper cuts may require medical intervention and take longer to heal.

Abrasions are very common sports injuries that are usually caused by a fall on a hard surface. As the athlete falls or slides on the ground, friction causes layers of skin to rub off. The skin is composed of an outer layer (the epidermis) which provides protection, and a deep inner layer (the dermis), which provides the firmness and flexibility of the skin. Abrasions typically refer to an injury that removes these layers of skin.

Causes of Abrasion:

Abrasions are caused by slight scraping, cutting or rubbing of the skin, resulting in it being grazed or broken. Cinnamon was traditionally used as a natural antiseptic and clove oil was used to disinfect the wound. Honey was spread on the wound also as an antiseptic and helped to speed up the healing process. Tea was also used externally to check bleeding and to fight against bacteria.

Symptoms of Abrasion:

The main symptom is sometimes painful exposure of tissue and nerve endings caused by the accidental removal of superficial layers of skin. Abrasions don't usually cause excessive bleeding, but sometimes slight bleeding can occur.

Abrasions Treatment:

1] Apply Aloe Vera gel on the affected part, as it acts as a soothing home remedy for Skin Abrasion.

2]  LAVENDER OIL applied to a clean cut or abrasion works as a painkiller and expedites the healing process.

3] Clean the area with a herbal antiseptic to prevent infection and aid in healing. You can use 4-5 drops of tincture of any of the following herbs in a little warm water or a decoction or an infusion of the herb.

•    golden seal

•    calendula

•    St John's wort

•    myrrh

•    witch hazel

4] The following, used as ointments, are suitable for minor cuts and abrasions:

•    St John's wort

•    calendula

•    comfrey

Other common remedies were crushed marigold flowers that are then applied externally; crushed Parsley leaves; crushed fresh plantain leaves; onion juice that is applied externally; dock leaves, applied either directly or as a lotion; tea made from sage applied externally; bruised geranium leaves; and pounded root or leaves of comfrey made into a poultice. While bathing, witch hazel and lavender made into compresses or poultices were used. Yarrow, meadowsweet and elderflowers were also utilized. Later on, iodine was used on abrasions and cuts more frequently.

Herbs have many healing and medicinal properties. Explore the many uses of the herbs, how to prepare and use them. They can easily be used for the treatment of many minor conditions such as minor skin cuts and abrasions. They can also be used for more serious problems and illnesses but before undertaking this you need to develop your understanding about the nature of herbs, their uses and their safety issues. The best approach to illnesses is to use herbs as a part of a wholistic treatment program.

Erythema Migrans

An allergic reaction to one of many factors can cause some skin rashes, blemishes and growths. A virus or exposure to environmental elements can also be a cause. If you notice any change in the color or consistency of your skin it is important to check with your doctor to get a proper diagnosis.

A rash that is associated with the early stages of lyme disease is erythema migrans. Within a month of being infected with lyme disease this condition will appear. The rash typically starts out small and red around the site of the tick bite before expanding. Individuals may develop more than one rash area in some cases. It may look like a bull’s-eye sometimes. The rash will not be developed by all patients with lyme disease. In approximately eighty percent of the individuals with lyme disease the rash will occur.

Causes of  Erythema  Migrans:

A rash occurs generally because of an allergic reaction. In the case of Erythema Migrans the rash appears because of an actual skin infection with the Lyme disease bacteria (Borrelia burgodferi sensu lato). There is no other disease that can cause Erythema Migrans and if a physician has identified the rash immediate treatment of Lyme disease is necessary.

Symptoms of  Erythema  Migrans:

Within a month of being bitten by the tick that carries lyme disease a red rash will develop. The rash typically starts out small and then grows. It can grow to as much as one foot across. It is not itchy or painful, but the rash may be warm to the touch. After three to four weeks the rash usually fades. Individuals may also experience a fever, headaches, body aches and a sense of fatigue. Many feel like they have common flu symptoms.

How can it be diagnosed?

In order to diagnose Erythema Migrans, a doctor will first have to diagnosis the individual as having Lyme disease. This done through a gathering of medical symptoms from the individual, their history, and blood test will be done to confirm the presence of Lyme disease. Once an individual is concluded to have Lyme disease, the rash is easy to identify as being associated with it. The rash can sometimes be missed if it is in areas that are not easy to view, such as the buttocks. Tick bites are harder to discover if it is in this area.

Treatment of  Erythema  Migrans:

1] 20-day course of amoxicillin is significantly more effective than a 7-day course of azithromycin for the treatment of erythema migrans skin lesions, a characteristic feature of early Lyme disease.

2] Doctors will often prescribe oral antibiotics to treat the Lyme disease. The individual will usually have to take these antibiotics for at least three weeks.

Erythema Migrans is one skin disorder that is caused by the body’s reaction to a virus. When this happens it is important to have the underlying cause of the disorder treated, in doing so most of the times the skin rash will begin to heal and go away on its own. Erythema Migrans can be confused with other rashes that look like it that is why it is important to determine if Lyme disease is the cause.

Chilblains

Chilblains are a localized, painful, redness of the skin - caused by a congestion of the capillaries in the lower layers of the skin. Chilblains are found on the fingers, toes and ears. The onset of chilblains is associated with poor circulation particularly to the peripheries. It can be made worse by a poor diet, cold weather, tight shoes and a sedentary occupation.

Chilblains, also called perniosis or blain, when occurring on the feet, is a medical condition that is often confused with frostbite and trench foot. Chilblains are acral ulcers that occur when a predisposed individual is exposed to cold and humidity. Acral refers to the extremities (e.g., fingers and toes). Chilblains are often idiopathic in origin but can be manifestations of serious medical conditions that need to be investigated. Chilblains can be prevented by keeping the feet and hands warm in cold weather. Smoking cessation and consultation with a dermatologist is advised.

Causes of  Chilblains:

Chilblains are caused by exposure of extremities such as fingers, ears, nose, and, especially, feet and toes to cold and damp, causing the skin to become tender, painful, and intensely itchy. People with sensitive skin or poor circulation are most vulnerable, especially those who smoke (nicotine reduces circulation in the skin).
