Well, I was born in Worcestor, Massachusetts in 1963. My family moved a lot (6 or 7 times as a kid) while I was growing up. My favorite place was Littleton, Colorado where we lived in the the housing tract just across the street from Columbine High School. Weird memories now. My brother Keith actually in one of the classes the teacher who was killed taught. So I go on... I started playing the snare drum in school many years ago. That changed to trumpet and when we moved to Long Beach, California in 1976, I asked to get a guitar after seeing a black Les Paul with three pickup's on the inside sleeve of Elton John's first live album. So on vacation my dad bought me my first acoustic. I didn't like reading the "how to book" and took one year of lessons at Guitars Afire. I also got my first electric guitar which was a copy of a Gibson S.G. made by Madera. Marty, my teacher, taught me chords and songs I wanted to learn how to play. After that I just kept playing and learning songs and albums I wanted to learn. I had also started playing the drums around the same time. I Love playing the drums!
When I was 16, I began playing the bass for lack of one to be found in a band of high school friends. I found I could really express myself much easier on the bass. It is my main instrument. In June of 1983, the band I was in "Four on One" opened for Berlin (you know.. Take my breathe away from the Top Gun soundtrack...) at Rain Cross Square in Riverside. It was there last date of there first world tour and wow... what a blast that was. 6,000 screaming fans, backstage passes, our own dressing room, signing autographs, and to top it off, an invitation to the after party celebration of there tour in Hollywood two weeks later where we were able to hob nob with many up and coming bands and some already established bands like Little River Band... I got to meet Glen Sharock the lead vocalist... very nice, cool guy. From there I picked up the keyboard around age 21 or so. I can't read music, I just play songs that I come up with. I was in many other bands till I was 26. After that I had some years off and did recording and writing on my own.
On the 3rd of May, 1988 after years of drinking, drugs, loose disfunctional relationships and now a failing marriage, much to do with my drugs and other compulsions, I laid my life down and excepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. The heart and life change was awesome and this spilled into my writing. I joined a Christian band named "Forthright" in 1989... it was now a three piece, power trio.Wallace on drums and vocals, Wade on guitar and vocals and myself on keys, bass and vocals. We all shared writing responsibilities and played together for about two years. Just to drop a name, we opened one night at Goodies in Fullerton, Ca. for a band called Majesty...anytakers as to who they are now....? They were signed to a record deal just a month or so after we played there and changed their name to "Dream Theatre"... small world huh! After that I still kept writing, but put my focus on getting my life more together and focusing on my two children whom I have full custody of!
Still no bands for many years, though I would moonlight with the music team at different churches and be a part of the music team and playing special music at the churches I attended over the years. In the past two years, my writing (after being virtually non-existent) began to become inspired again and I have written a number of what I feel are strong songs to add to my list. In March of 2006, after realizing a move out of state wasn't the right thing for us, I began a search again for musicians to form a band. The first contact was Cellist, Mark Converti, whom I performed with this past June 3rd to a packed house at "Caffeine Online Coffee shop" in Mesa. The sets were a mix of originals, both Christian and plain ol' love songs, some praise tunes from Christian artists I like and some very cool 70's and 80's tunes I love such as "Sister Golden Hair" by America, Tequila Sunrise by the Eagles, Play Me & I am I said by Neil Diamond, I Am a Child by Neil Young and Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Four gold stars for Mark for learning the lead to C. Numb and making it sound awesome from the cello!
I now seek to continue to play out with Mark as much as possible and will continue to search for other players. Most sought are a keyboardist who can either sing and or play acoustic, another acoustic player and maybe a drummer. At least I would want a percussionist who can also run a drum machine. So that's it for a bit about me. I hope you can come out and check out the tunes at the next gig. I will keep this site posted for upcoming dates. Until then, Lord bless you all and I look forward to meeting you at the next show.
In His Service,
Kevin
