I am interested in truth through an understanding of reality
that is based on evidence.
Here are some things to think about.
Everybody nowadays is an atheist about Thor and Apollo. Some of us just go one god further.
The word "faith" means belief without evidence. This means that with faith you can easily take all accounts of UFOs, ghosts and goblins as being true in the exact same way as accepting a belief in god, with no change to the logic.
There may be fairies at the bottom of the garden. There is no evidence for it, but you can't prove that there aren't any, so shouldn't we be agnostic with respect to fairies?
A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death. -Albert Einstein
Many believe the Bible is of questionable accuracy, as it was written thousands of years ago by many authors who were recording oral tradition that existed many years before. Thus, any claimed "truth" in it is of questionable legitimacy. This isn't to say that The Bible has no truth in it; simply that any truth must be examined before being accepted. Many also feel that because any passage is subject to "interpretation," any claim that a passage "means" one thing and one thing only is not legitimate. Note that this feeling tends to extend to other books.
Believing the world is only 6,000 years old is the equivalent to believing the width of North America is 7.8 yards.
imnot, absolutely everyone starts with a presupposition. Some people start with the presupposition that the God of the Bible does not exist. Some people start with the presupposition that the God of the Bible does exist. The charge that I cannot "prove" that the God of the Bible exists is a two-edged sword! Even if it is true that I cannot "prove" that the God of the Bible does exist, absolutely no one, without any exceptions at all, can "prove" that the God of the Bible does not exist.
I hope that you have a good day.
